TCA’s Ashley McGuire Calls Wrongfully Convicted Jimmy Lai a Global Hero

Jimmy Lai, former media mogul and prominent advocate for democracy and freedom of the press in Hong Kong, has been found guilty of conspiring to collude against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) after a months-long trial that ended in a conviction which could sentence him to life in prison. The 78 year-old, who is in failing health, has been imprisoned since December of 2020.

Ashley McGuire of the Catholic Association released this statement on the case:

“Jimmy Lai’s only crime is standing up for freedom and truth at great personal cost. He is one of the greatest Christian witnesses of our time; and if the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does not release him, they will make him a martyr. Already, he is a global hero – the modern face of conscience rights in the face of totalitarianism. Perhaps his only hope for release is strong pressure from the Trump administration. But Lai’s abiding faith has made it clear that his hope is found in something much greater than earthly powers. The CCP will be forgotten, but Lai’s courage will be remembered and celebrated forever.

The CCP must free Jimmy Lai, or they will make him an eternal martyr.”
