In an interview with Fox News Radio, TCA’s senior fellow Mary FioRito discusses the process happening in Rome among the 133 cardinals who will elect the next pope, in what she describes as “a very profound moment for Catholics.” Mary shares the qualifications cardinals will be looking for and posits some names that surfaced in many discussions this week. These include Cardinal Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tagle as the possible first Asian Pope, Cardinal Sarah who would be the first pope from Africa, and Cardinal Pizzaballa of Jerusalem, known for his selfless act of volunteering to take the place of kidnapped children in the October 2023 attack by Hamas. Ultimately, Mary says “we’re praying the cardinals will be able to discern what God’s will is for the Church going forward.”
