In an interview with NewsNation, TCA’s senior fellow Ashley McGuire recalls the 2013 conclave watching Pope Francis step onto the balcony and announce his intention to go to the peripheries of the world. “That’s absolutely what he did when he appointed cardinals from parts of the world who never had cardinals,” she says. Now these cardinals who are unfamiliar with each other have gathered together for the conclave. “It certainly adds an element of unpredictability to things,” she says, “so we’ll see.”
