1. Report: 1 in 5 Irish priests and brothers have died in the past three years, By Catholic News Agency, January 14, 2022, 5:15 AM
An Irish newspaper has reported that 1 in 5 of the country’s priests and religious brothers have died in the past three years.
The Irish Examiner said on Jan. 8 that “more than 21% of Ireland’s entire population of parish priests and brothers — both serving and retired — have died in just three years.”
The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference was unable to confirm the figure as the statistics are recorded locally by Ireland’s 26 dioceses and its religious orders.

2. New Jersey Adds Abortion Protections to State Law, Move comes as U.S. Supreme Court weighs federal protections for abortion rights, By Jennifer Calfas, The Wall Street Journal, January 13, 2022, 2:31 PM
A person’s right to an abortion in New Jersey is now enshrined in state law, as lawmakers there bolstered protections for the procedure months ahead of a pivotal U.S. Supreme Court decision that could upend federal abortion rights.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill Thursday that codifies abortion rights into state law. He also signed a second bill that expands insurance coverage for birth control.

3. Victims seek definitive European ruling on Vatican immunity, By Nicole Winfield, Associated Press, January 13, 2022
Clergy abuse victims asked the European Court of Human Rights on Thursday to make a definitive ruling on whether the Holy See can continue to avoid being held liable for sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests by claiming state immunity.
Lawyers for the victims asked the court’s Grand Chamber to hear the case, after a lower Chamber judgment in October agreed that the Vatican couldn’t be sued in a local Belgian court because it enjoys sovereign immunity. The lower judgment concurred with Belgian courts that had dismissed the case, also determining that the misconduct of priests can’t be attributed to the Holy See.

4. Texas sues Planned Parenthood over $10M in Medicaid payments, By Associated Press, January 13, 2022
Texas wants Planned Parenthood to return more than $10 million in payments for low-income patients under a lawsuit filed Thursday, years after Republican leaders moved to cut off Medicaid dollars to the abortion provider.

Planned Parenthood spent years in court fighting its removal from the Medicaid program but ultimately lost. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is now arguing to a federal judge in Amarillo that Planned Parenthood was not entitled to keep the more than $10 million it received in reimbursements while fighting the decision.

5. North Dakota bishops oppose UND gender inclusion policy, By James MacPherson, Associated Press, January 13, 2022
A group that represents North Dakota’s Catholic bishops is contacting parents of students at the University of North Dakota and asking that they urge administrators to reject the school’s proposed “gender inclusion” policy.
The policy, which is still in draft form, would require the use of a transgender person’s preferred pronouns and the use of locker rooms, bathrooms and other living facilities that align with a person’s gender identity.
In a letter this week from the North Dakota Catholic Conference, on behalf of Bishop David Kagan of Bismarck and Bishop John Folda of Fargo, parents are asked “to examine whether it is conducive or hostile to not only the Catholic faith but also the truth about the human person.”
