As the 2020 presidential election draws closer, we find it increasingly important to not only look at the two primary candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but to also look at their potential Vice Presidents, Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, as well. In American history, approximately 20% of Vice Presidents have taken over the duty of President during their tenure, so it’s understandable that we should look at the VP candidates’ stances and backgrounds to get a clear look at the future of America, especially Catholic America.
Mike Pence grew up in a Catholic household, but now considers himself an Evangelical Christian. However, he still openly cherishes and admits the benefit of his Catholic upbringing, which has shaped his personal and political ideals to this day. Over the years, Pence has championed such causes as defunding Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices and outlawing discriminatory abortions. His pro-life stance has earned him favor with the Catholic community who believe in respect for all life and international religious liberty.
On the other side of the coin, Kamala Harris, who considers herself a Black Baptist, has shown consistent intolerance for the Christian community. One such example comes from her fight to force Christian-owned company Hobby Lobby to offer abortifacient drugs in its employee healthcare plan. She is also noted for leveraging the power of the attorney general’s office to aggressively prosecute a citizen who went undercover to expose Planned Parenthood’s alleged involvement in the aborted fetus organ black market.
With the election just around the corner, we hope citizens understand how starkly different these two candidates are, and what their involvement can mean for the future of Catholic America.
